There have been few people in history who have been able to shift the paradigm in American sports. On July 5th, 1975, Arthur Ashe changed the sport of tennis forever by becoming the first African American to win at Wimbledon, upsetting the No.1 ranked player in the world, Jimmy Connors, in six games to win the match.
Arthur Ashe was more than a Tennis champion, he used his platform to effect change in the lives of others by championing causes like apartheid and, later on in his life, advocating for people with Aids after he contracted the disease after open heart surgery. Check out this short documentary by PBS about Ashe to get some insight into his incredible impact on Tennis and America.
